Shigemi Sugiki, MD is one of the most well known and experienced ophthalmologists in Hawaii. In addition to cataract surgery, he has had a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma.
Dr. Sugiki was born and raised on Maui and obtained his undergraduate and medical degrees from Washington University in Saint Louis. He completed his undergraduate degree in just three years with a major in philosophy. He completed his ophthalmology training at Washington University Barnes Hospital and the Veterans Administration Hospital.
He has been in practice in Honolulu since 1965, and before opening his practice at the Queen’s Physicians’ Building, was affiliated with Straub Clinic. Dr. Sugiki is Board Certified in Ophthalmology, and is one of the most respected ophthalmologists in Hawaii. Over the years, he has introduced many new procedures to Hawaii and has been one the leading glaucoma specialists.
Dr. Shigemi Sugiki has been elected by his peers to Best Doctors in America® from 1999 to 2018.
Dr. Sugiki achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and was selected as the regional representative to meet with President Eisenhower. He also served in the US Army Medical Corps, is a black-belt instructor in Aikido, and enjoys fishing in his spare time.
